VOS and Interreality Status Update; SIGGRAPH; website

It's been a while since we made any announcements about VOS. The
project is not dead, though Peter and I have not had much time in the
past few months to work on it.

Based on discussions on the mailing list and IRC, Peter is now working
on some important changes to VOS itself. Certain core aspects of the
VOS design will change, as will the API and process of implementing
object types, but the overall idea will remain and we will gain some
important new tools and features, and fix some fundamental problems that
emerged in the previous design.

We are also planning a new client program that's more modular and will
be useful for different kind of applications (3D display, visualization
and "dashboards", general object management, and more); I've started
this based on Peter's prototype from a while back.

Check the vos-d archives or ask about it if you would like more info on
the upcoming changes.

SIGGRAPH
--------

Pete is at SIGGRAPH right now, so if anyone wants to meet up, you can
contact him by email (tetron @ interreality.org).

Website
-------

I've changed the website, it removes a lot of information that will no
longer be relevant for future versions of VOS, but if anyone needs
anything that is now missing let me know.

interreality 3d 0.1 released

The first prototype of next generation "s5" development branch of VOS
has been released. This is a user interface prototype, intended to
demonstrate progress, solicit feedback and get bug reports.

Interreality 3D is supported on Windows, OS X (intel) and Linux.
Download it here:

http://interreality.org/download

A few notes:
- This is a prototype. It lacks major functionality, in particular it
lacks any sort of networking backend. The purpose is to demonstrate
user interface ideas.

- Please sends us your comments, concerns and ideas, either to the
vos-d mailing list, or on the web at the vos-d discussion board at:
http://interreality.org/phorum/

- If you find a crash, please file it with Bugzilla:
http://interreality.org/bugzilla/

I hope you find this prototype interesting, and it is a sign of much
more development to come!

Forums integrated with mailing lists

To better facilitate communication among developers and users users, and to include those who are interested in VOS but do not wish to join a mailing list, Interreality.org is now hosting web forums for VOS. The forums have been integrated with the existing mailing lists, so that posts to the mailing list are added to the forums, and forum posts are propagated to the mailing list. (The forum also supplies RSS feeds.) Mailing list users are encouraged to create forum accounts, as the forum software is able to match email addresses to forum accounts.
